OpenAI has entered the hardware arena with its largest acquisition to date—a $6.4 billion all-equity deal for io, the AI hardware startup founded by legendary Apple designer Jony Ive. The move signals a strategic expansion beyond generative AI models, integrating io’s team directly into OpenAI’s operations while Ive retains creative independence through his design firm, LoveFrom.
The former Apple design chief, credited with iconic products like the iPhone and iPad, will oversee design and creative direction for both OpenAI and io. The io team will relocate to San Francisco to collaborate closely with OpenAI’s AI and product divisions, marking a significant convergence of AI software and hardware expertise.
